Character Name: Kotoko Utsugi
Age: Around 11-12. For the sake of consistency I'll say 11.
Canon: Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls
Canon Point: Chapter 5, after being rescued by Komaru and Fukawa
Character Information: http://danganronpa.wikia.com/wiki/Kotoko_Utsugi (WARNING: this link + the following personality talk about child abuse, murder, and child rape/sexual abuse)
Personality: Kotoko is a girl truly befitting a title of 'Super Elementary School Level Drama.' A former child actress, Kotoko knows exactly how to lie and hide her true feelings in order to play a role and get ahead. She reveals at the end that all of her fawning over Monaca has been an act, for example, and that really she despised Monaca, but was too afraid of her to do anything at first. At several instances her words will contradict the emotions she's actively portraying, such as declaring herself "seriously angry!" Even though she's smiling and her tone is cheerful. She has an almost iron-clad control over her emotions, rarely showing more than she wants and it's usually safe to say that what you see is what she allows you to see. This mastery of acting makes her one of the many child prodigies attending Hope's Peak Elementary School, a school dedicated to researching such child prodigies, though her attitude and mischievous nature, along with many other problems from home that leaked into her daily life, labeled her a 'troublemaker' and put her in the 'troubled' class where she was able to meet Nagisa, Jataro, Masaru, and Monaca.
There's no doubt that Kotoko is troubled though. Faced with what seemed like an inescapable horrid home life where her father was having an affair with little care in hiding it, and where her mother actively pimped her out in a mother-daughter set to score her jobs, taking the role of "stage mom" to horrifying levels, acting out was more than understandable. Having been repeatedly exposed to this at such a young age definitely did a lot of damage to Kotoko's psyche. Her stepford smiling routine is rarely broken up in front of new people-- she states that if she wasn't acting, she'd be miserable, so she continues a cutesy little girl act to hide that away. "If I stop acting, it would be bad. I'd lose my cool, like some miserable old wretch!" She remains polite and cheerful, though also with a terrible childish cruelty that's usually backed with sexual innuendo or implications, showing a degree of hypersexualization that can be found in sexual abuse cases. This is evident in her doing things like falling over and letting her skirt fly up, or showing that she's unarmed by lifting her skirt up to flash her bloomers. She wants adults, particularly adult women, to suffer as she had and lashes out against all adults for never stepping in to help her when she was in trouble. She acknowledges that what they did was bad and that what she's doing in revenge is 'bad,' but since no one stopped them it means it's fine to keep doing it herself, along with things like murder. "I'm not a bad girl. This is just payback for what happened to me."
She can easily do horrid things without a care and without remorse--she killed her own parents, with her only regret being that she could only do it once. Talking about her past or casually mentioning what's happened to the others doesn't bother her much either, and she seems to gt a kick out of making adults uncomfortable or forcing them to face the reality of the injustices faced by herself or other children. She has little to no sympathy for adults or those that can't help themselves, though it's likely she's more lenient to children like herself. She tells Komaru outright, "if you're adorable too, you have to protect yourself. On your own. If you can't, you have to take whatever they give you." She uses the fact she's a cute little girl to her advantage, ready to cry or pretend to be scared or act off-the-wall silly at a drop of a hat to make people lower their guard. For example, when rescuing Komaru from her cell, Kotoko pretends to poorly act out fighting scenes, complete with her own sound effects, falling over and generally making herself seem very nonthreatening so that Komaru will leave ahead of her and Kotoko can knock her out.
Kotoko is also shrewdly intelligent despite her young age, coming up with plans and seeing through most of Monaca's lies easily. In her journal she remarks, "youth might not be eternal, but I'm sure knowledge is." She can see through people, though genuinely 'good' people seem to just confuse her or she thinks they're lying to make themselves seem/feel better, which just irritates her. That said, she, like most children, does enjoy routine and having a schedule, as much as she might say otherwise--she says as much in a journal of hers' you fine, that she "doesn't like sudden things." She's also shown to be quite violent and cruel, especially towards some of her fellow warriors, like Jataro, who she bullies often. She teases them and pushes buttons, especially with Jataro and with Nagisa's crush on Monaca.
This doesn't mean Kotoko is completely without a soft side. She cares deeply for her fellow warriors and friends (yes, even Jataro), and becomes quite sad after their supposed deaths (although she does remark that she "doesn't care" about Jataro's 'death' because she "hated him anyways," it's likely this isn't true and was simply because she didn't think he actually was gone). In one of the first moments showing her distrust in Monaca, Kotoko questions about his 'death,' and why they're not holding a funeral for him. She's scared of Monaca, however, and quickly cowls to her. She's also still a child at heart, and despite feeling justified in her actions against her parents, loved her mother very much. She remarks that she endured a lot of what she did because of love for her mother and not wanting not wanting to see her cry-- "If I hold in a little pain and fear and sadness, Mommy doesn't have to cry a single tear." She's also shown to panic when Komaru contemplates breaking the controller because breaking the brainwashing helmets on the kids would also kill all the kids, and she begs Komaru not to do so because she'd "be all alone." She's also quick to call Monaca a traitor and openly despise and berate her for trying to kill their friends, telling her "so, it'd be great if you could die a totally adorbs death" before abandoning her to the collapsing tower, showing that Kotoko holds friendship fiercely and loyally.
Kotoko also shows traces of PTSD, in particular in the form of a trigger word "gentle." When this word is uttered around her, Kotoko breaks down. She becomes even more incredibly violent and upset, screaming, crying, and begging for "anything but gentle." It takes a little while for her to calm down from it this is because the men who would rape her would often try to reassure her that they would be "gentle" with her, but it would still end up hurting her anyhow.
